The first restaurant to operate under the name "AutomatTM was opened in 1902 in New York City. The concept was based on inexpensive and nourishing food delivered through vending machines in a buffet/cafeteria setting. It featured art deco themes and setting. It featured art deco themes and very upscale fixtures and it became so popular that celebrities were routinely seen there, along with white-collar and blue-collar workers. Songs were written about the AutomatTM and it was frequently featured in movies. The AutomatTM grew for decades, to it started to decline soon thereafter.

The AutomatTM remains a part of many people's memories. A book entitled the "The Automat"TM has recently been published which celebrated the Automat's 100th anniversary an is a wonderful nostalgic piece on the restaurants and those who frequented them. A recent exhibit at the Museum of the City of New York features a temporary display of the pictures and machines from the old AutomatTM restaurants. A glance through the guest book reveals extremely positive memories associated with the AutomatTM, particularily from adults who remember it as no doubt that the concept, the residual goodwill and therefore the potential for revival exists.
